The question of grades, intelligence and work ethic

This blog post was inspired by a discussion I had with a couple of fellas on twitter the other day. The question is whether higher grades or a higher GPA is a measure of a hard work ethic. I come down on the side of hard work as a general rule leading to higher grades and a higher GPA. As in all generalities it's not a perfect analogy but I think the overwhelming majority of those who do well in school also work hard to get there.

If you start with the proposition that we enter this world with a blank slate and everything we are is a learned process, then the more you take in the more you learn and know. For the average person this means the more time and effort you put in the more information you have at your disposal. The more information you retain the better the opportunity to become a more informed individual. Again, as a general rule the more educated/informed you are the higher your grades and corresponding GPA.

Also, anyone reading this should feel free to intersperse education and information. In the end they are really one and the same. In order to obtain both you work at obtaining it.
